Tenterden & the Weald — domestic & commercial
Silicone Sealant Applicatorsin Tenterdensealing that suits old buildings
Weatherboarding, tile hanging and oak frames move with the seasons and cannot be sealed like a modern extension. We pick low-modulus, neutral-cure products and detail joints so they flex with the building instead of splitting away from it.

Tenterden coverage
Sealant work in Tenterden,
done by people who know it
We are based at The Historic Dockyard in Chatham, roughly 30 miles north of Tenterden. The run down the A274 and A28 takes around an hour, and Tenterden is a planned, regular part of our week rather than an exception — we book work here in sensible blocks so the journey never becomes your cost.
Tenterden and the surrounding Weald
We cover Tenterden itself — the High Street, St Michaels and the surrounding lanes — plus the villages around it: Rolvenden, Biddenden, Bethersden, High Halden, Woodchurch, Appledore, Wittersham and out towards Hamstreet.
This is rural, dispersed work: single properties down long lanes, farm buildings, oast conversions and village-centre listed houses. As an owner-run two-person team we are set up for exactly that — one van, everything carried, no compound needed and no crew to keep occupied.
Getting to Tenterden, and how we schedule it
Tenterden is around an hour from our Chatham base, so we plan full days here rather than dropping in for twenty minutes. That works in your favour: the whole job — bathroom, windows, external joints — gets done in one visit instead of being spread across several.
Our hours are Monday to Saturday, 7am to 7pm, which suits rural and holiday-let work where access windows are tight between guests, and commercial work in village shops and pubs that has to happen before opening.
Property types we work on here
Tenterden's building stock is heavily weighted towards period Wealden construction: timber-framed houses, white weatherboarding, tile-hung elevations, peg-tiled roofs, brick and Kentish ragstone, oast houses and barn conversions, plus Georgian and Victorian High Street property, many of them listed.
Alongside that are modern additions — extensions, garden rooms, orangeries and new bathrooms inserted into old houses — and it is usually at the junction between old and new that sealant is asked to do the most difficult work.
What Tenterden calls us out for
External sealing to weatherboarding, window and door reveals and extension abutments is the most common request, followed by bathroom and wet room sealing in period houses where the room is small and the ventilation is limited.
We also do a steady amount of removal-and-reseal work where an earlier general builder used a hard, high-modulus product on moving timber, plus colour-matched work where a white bead would look wrong against oak, painted boarding or stone, and commercial sealing for shops, pubs, holiday lets and village halls.

Local conditions
What actually fails
on Tenterden buildings
Timber that moves with every season
Weatherboarding, oak frames and softwood joinery expand and contract measurably through the year. Hard, high-modulus sealant cannot follow that movement: it tears along one edge, and the resulting slot channels water directly into the timber it was meant to protect — the worst possible outcome on a building where the frame is the structure.
We use low-modulus products at every timber interface here, size the joint to give the sealant room to stretch, and use backing rod so it bonds to two faces rather than three. On oak, we also allow for tannin staining and choose products accordingly.
Listed buildings and visible detail
Much of Tenterden's High Street and many surrounding farmhouses are listed or in conservation areas. A thick white bead across a painted boarded elevation or a stone reveal is immediately conspicuous, and on a listed building the wrong material choice can be a genuine problem rather than an aesthetic one.
Our approach is discreet: neutral-cure products that will not attack paint or stain stone, minimal bead widths, colour matched to the surrounding finish, and honest advice where sealant is not the right answer at all and the joint needs a lime or joinery repair instead.
Wealden weather and exposed rural elevations
The Weald is open country, and rural properties get the full weight of south-westerly wind-driven rain with no neighbouring buildings to shelter them. Add strong summer UV on the same elevations and exposed sealant here ages faster than on urban stock — crazing, hardening, then detaching.
We specify UV-stable external products, prepare substrates properly so the bond forms, and tool a concave profile that throws water off the joint instead of letting it sit on the top edge.
Uneven substrates in old houses
Old floors and walls are rarely flat or square. A shower tray on a settled floor, a bath against an undulating plastered wall or a worktop meeting a bowed wall all produce joints that vary in width along their length — and a bead gunned at one setting across that variation is thin in places and unsupported in others.
We size and pack those joints properly, varying backing where needed, so the bead has consistent depth and support along the whole run. It takes longer and it is the reason the seal holds.

Questions
Tenterden sealant questions,
answered straight
Do you cover Tenterden?
Yes — Tenterden, St Michaels and the surrounding Weald villages including Rolvenden, Biddenden, Bethersden, High Halden, Woodchurch, Appledore and Wittersham. We travel from Chatham, around 30 miles north.
How quickly can you get to Tenterden?
It is around an hour via the A274 and A28. We plan Tenterden work as full days rather than short visits, so your whole job gets done in one trip. Hours are Monday to Saturday, 7am to 7pm, and we will be honest about the next date we have free.
What does sealant work cost in Tenterden?
Every job gets a free fixed written quote based on run length, removal, access and the product specified. There is no rural travel surcharge — we manage that by scheduling work here sensibly. Small jobs can be quoted from photographs.
Is emergency work available in Tenterden?
We are not a 24-hour emergency service, and being an hour away we will not pretend otherwise. Our 7am to 7pm Monday to Saturday hours cover urgent reseals where we have capacity, and we will tell you straight away if we cannot help quickly.
Can you seal a listed or timber-framed building?
Yes. We use neutral-cure, low-modulus products that will not stain stone or attack paint, keep beads minimal and colour-matched, and will tell you when sealant is the wrong solution for a particular joint.
Why did the sealant on our weatherboarding fail so quickly?
Almost always because a hard, high-modulus product was used on moving timber, or because the joint was too shallow and bonded on three sides. Both prevent the bead from stretching, so it splits at the first seasonal movement.
Do you work on holiday lets and rural businesses?
Yes — we work around changeover days and opening hours for holiday lets, shops, pubs and village halls, and our early starts make that easier.
What insurance and accreditation do you hold?
£2 million public liability cover, CITB and CSCS accreditation, and RAMS on request for commercial work. Documents are sent before we start.
Do you offer a guarantee?
We do not advertise a guarantee. We use the right product for the substrate, prepare properly and size joints for movement, and we will tell you plainly what service life to expect in this exposure.
Which sealants do you use?
Trade products from Mapei, Illbruck, CT1 and Arbo, chosen for the substrate and the movement expected, and named on your quote.
